The Mozart Association Italy ( was set up in Rovereto on 12th January 1991, the bicentenary year of Mozart's death. But beyond the celebrations of the time was the desire to deepen the study of Mozart's work and the longing of a close knit circle of enthusiasts to lay a solid basis for this.

Indeed in 1987 the Mozart Festival had been founded in Rovereto, an annual series of concerts and events mostly dedicated to the great maestros from Salzburg, aimed at a vast audience of music lovers, both Italian and foreign. A number of these people felt the need to give some continuity to the meetings and to foster greater attendance and greater knowledge of Mozart's music through a suitable structure. Rovereto, perhaps not by chance, is home to a centre of this kind. In fact the town, which stands where Germanic culture meets Latin, was the first significant place where Mozart stopped on the journey to Italy which he undertook with his father in 1769. It was Christmas of that year when he held his first concert on this side of the Alps, in the rooms of the Palazzo Todeschi building. He entranced the cultured nobility of Rovereto with his genius and they immediately appreciated him, as is shown by a quantity of evidence.

Signor Bridi, a Viennese banker from Rovereto built an imaginary tomb dedicated to Mozart and the Tempietto dell'Armonia, little Temple of Harmony, in the garden of his house on the Imperial road, today Viale Trento; or the Counts Pizzini of Ala where Mozart stayed every time he came to Italy. He, in turn, repaid their hospitality giving various concerts there; or again in Nogaredo, near Rovereto, where the memories of the Lodron family are still bright. They provided Salzburg with numerous illustrious characters including Countess Antonia Lodron and her two daughters, to whom Mozart dedicated three compositions. Still it was not only the nobility who were able to witness young Wolfgang's displays fo skill, in fact on 26th December he performed in the Church of San Marco so on that memorable day the entire population of the city could hear him.
