Mozart Miniature: The original at auction -- A copy on display

A miniature portrait of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, which is believed to have been a present for his Augsburg cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart (1758-1841), has been auctioned by Sotheby's in London on 20 November 2014.

The item was sold to an unknown bidder for 218.500 British Pound (ca. 273.627  Euro). As one of few presumably authentic portraits of Mozart this miniature continues to remain in private ownership.

The small image showing Mozart at the age of about 21 years has been known to scholars since the Mozart biography of Otto Jahn (vol. 2, Leipzig 1856, p. 74). Remarkably, a faithful copy of this gift of friendship which even renders exactly the minor signs of damage of the original was made in the late 19th century. This copy is in private possession in Berlin and has been left to the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg as a permanent loan; it is on display in the Mozart Residence on Makartplatz from now on. The miniature supplements the unique collection of Mozart portraits of the Mozarteum Foundation; this collection comprises the majority of authentic Mozart portraits, that is, portraits created during the composer’s lifetime with his express consent.
