We mourn the passing of Claudio Abbado

The Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation is greatly saddened by news of the death of Claudio Abbado, who died on 20 January 2014.  Maestro Abbado first conducted at the Mozart Week in 1968, and in subsequent seasons conducted six concerts.

In programmes of the Easter Festival and the Salzburg Festival, Claudio Abbado conducted several concerts in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation.  He was a great supporter and admirer of Mozart’s music and founded the Orchestra di Mozart Bologna which he conducted in his last concert in Salzburg in July 2012 in the Haus für Mozart.

It is hard to imagine a greater loss for the world of classical music.  The premiere of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice as the opening production of the Mozart Week 2014 was dedicated to Claudio Abbado.
