Golden Mozart Medal Awarded to Miloš Forman

Film director Miloš Forman was awarded the Golden Mozart Medal during the recent presentation in America by the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation

During the presentation by the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation in America Miloš Forman was able to accept the Golden Mozart Medal awarded for his services in disseminating knowledge about Mozart.  In 1984 Forman directed the film version of Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus. The film received 8 Oscars; for Amadeus Miloš Forman received his second Oscar as best director.

The award took place on 11 June 2013 in Miloš Forman’s private home.  In the presence of his wife Martina, Thomas Bodmer, member of the board of governors, and Matthias Schulz, executive manager and artistic director of the Mozarteum Foundation, president Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg awarded Miloš Forman this highest distinction of the Mozarteum Foundation.

As President Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg stated, “Miloš Forman achieved something absolutely incredible with his film Amadeus in making Mozart known to the world and for this Miloš Forman deserves special thanks.  It gives us great pleasure that the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation is able to present an expression of this gratitude. It is a particular sign of the openness and international orientation of the Mozarteum Foundation.”

As Matthias Schulz, executive manager and artistic director of the Mozarteum Foundation, said, “The conversations during our meeting with Miloš Forman last week showed once again what enormous efforts and what seriousness went into the making of this film and that above all the music had a major role to play. This honour was long overdue.”

Miloš Forman was very pleased to receive the award and stressed that he particularly values this honour bestowed on him by a renowned Austrian cultural institution. He said that Mozart the man and musician had fascinated him throughout his life.  He treasures special memories of the unique collaboration with conductor Sir Neville Marriner.

The Golden Mozart Medal has been awarded since the year 1914 by proposition and resolution of the annual general meeting of members of the Mozarteum Foundation during the Mozart Day. The medal is awarded to personalities who have shown themselves worthy in outstanding manner of supporting the work and efforts of the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation. Other bearers of the Golden Mozart Medal include Bruno Walter, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Sándor Végh, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and András Schiff.
