Sir Colin Davis

The Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Sir Colin Davis, who during the 1980s and 1990s was a frequent guest at the Mozart Week when he conducted concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic. Sir Colin Davis was internationally renowned for his interpretations of Mozart, Berlioz and Sibelius, and Mozart especially accompanied him throughout his entire artistic creativity.

Over the years he made many outstanding recordings of works by Mozart, including various operas, symphonies, piano concertos with soloists such as Ingrid Haebler and Evgeny Kissin, as well as sacred works such as the Mass in C minor and the Requiem. Sir Colin was intensely involved in the complete edition of Mozart’s works issued by Philips, recording Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, and all the Violin Concertos with Arthur Grumiaux as soloist. The British conductor was born in 1927 in Surrey and knighted in 1980. In 1971 he was appointed music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; from 1983 to 1992 he was principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.  He was president of the London Symphony Orchestra and also conductor laureate of the Staatskapelle Dresden. The world of music has lost one of the great and perceptive interpreters of Mozart.
